Courses

ALRI offers a wide variety of interesting and relevant college-level courses. Retired and/or working professionals drawn from government, academia, think tanks, and private industry, serve as volunteer instructors. ALRI welcomes contact from persons interested in volunteering their services to teach a course in their area of interest and expertise.

Registration Procedures

To register for a course, you must be a member of ALRI. There is a fee for each course (in addition to the annual membership fee).  Catalogs are mailed to members as soon as they are printed, at least ten days before the beginning of registration. The Fall 2009 catalog is now available online. 

For the Fall 2009 term, course registration began on September 14th at 10:00 AM. Members registering online will receive immediate online confirmation of their registration plus a confirming e-mail. The online system will not accept any registrations until September 14th at 10:00 AM.  Paper registrations received on or before that date were processed in random order by ALRI volunteers on September 14th beginning at 10:00 AM. Paper forms received thereafter will be processed during office hours in the order in which they are received. Members sending in paper registration forms will receive a confirmation letter via first-class mail. No phone registrations are accepted. 

Classes

·         George Mason University's Arlington campus near the Virginia Square Metro;

·         the newly remodeled Fairlington Community Center in South Arlington;

·         the Clarendon Education Center by the Market Common Clarendon;

·         the Walter Reed Community Center in South Arlington;

·         The Jefferson in Ballston;

·         the WETA headquarters in Shirlington; and

·          the Signature Theatre in Shirlington. 

• The courses run four to ten weeks (length determined by the instructor).
• Courses normally require a minimum of eight enrollees. (This is a higher number than previous semesters.) The maximum is set by the instructor or the room size. A typical class would have 15 to 25 enrollees.

• Non-members may obtain a copy of our catalog at most Arlington public libraries and senior centers.  Also, catalogs and brochures are available at the Adult Ed counter or the ALRI office on the third floor of the Clarendon Education Center. 
• Non-members can join our mailing list temporarily by requesting this online under the Membership option on our website or by sending a request by e-mail, mail or phone.
